Professional Football Career
From 1971 to 1973, Theismann played for the the Canadian Football League as the quarterback for the Toronto Argonauts. According to Theismann, he was a fourth-round NFL draft pick, and his decision had come down to the CFL or Miami Dolphins. He had, apparently, made up his mind that, “come hell or high water” he would play for the Dolphins, until negotiations turned south and he went with the CFL.
In 1974, after his contract had ended with the CFL, Theismann joined the Washington Redskins. His career with the Redskins was nothing short of illustrious, and earned him a number of team records. Theismann hold records for the most consecutive passes thrown without interception (162), most career pass attempts ( at 3,602), and, at 2,044 completions, he also holds the record for the most career pass completions. He was also named one of the Redskins’ 70 best players throughout history.
Additionally, he leads the Redskins with an all-time passing yardage record ( a total of 25,206). In 1983, after leading the Redskins to victory over the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl XVII, Theismann was awarded the AP MVP award, and the AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year Award.
The year before leading the Redskins to Superbowl victory, Theismann was named the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award for community service.
In 1985, Theismann’s career as an NFL quarterback came to a screeching halt. During a Monday Night Football game against the New York Giants, Theismann dropped back to throw a pass and was jumped on by Giants linebacker, Lawrence Taylor, just as another Giants player hit his leg, snapping both his fibula and his tibia, the two major bones in the lower part of the leg.
In an interview with Men’s Fitness, Theismann says of the injury, “that moment changed my life,” adding that he has only seen the footage of the injury once, and he’ll never see it again.

Broadcasting Career
While his career as a player ended after that fateful break, his career in sports was far from over. In 1988, after two years of working with CBS, he began hosting ESPN Sunday-night football broadcasts, a position which held until March of 2007 when he was let go.
Despite the end of his stint with ESPN, Theismann continued to hold down television jobs, particularly as a spokesman for a national TV ad for the pill, Super Beta Prostate and the life insurance company, Colonial Penn.
Celebrity Endorser
After being diagnosed with prostatitis, a condition in which the prostate gland undergoes a temporary inflammation, resulting in elevated PSAs as well as difficulties urinating, Theismann became paid spokesperson for the product.
According to their website, superbeta.com, Super Beta Prostate is a supplement designed to support prostate health and alleviate urinary issues. The pill promises to fix or improve common symptoms of prostatitis, such as weak urine streams and the frequent urges to urinate.
According to multiple reviews of the product, its efficacy is dubious, and a June 2013 systematic review of clinical trials related the the effects of dietary supplements on PSA levels found that “In conclusion, the hypothesis that dietary supplements are effective treatments for prostate cancer patients is not supported by sound clinical evidence.”
If you are thinking of trying this or any other product to treat your prostatitis, consult your physician first.
In addition to his endorsement of Super Beta Prostate, Joe Theismann has also appeared in commercials for the life insurance company, Colonial Penn.
